Thanks to Laser Resurfacing, it's possible to achieve what is known as Photo-Rejuvenation.
For this purpose, at the Medical SPA Absolute Health, we use a fractional CO2 Laser. The CO2 Laser targets the water present in the skin.

How photorejuvenation works
At the epidermal level, the outermost component of the skin, Laser irradiation causes ablation of cells through evaporation and re-epithelialisation with more uniform skin that is free from the characteristic signs of photoaging and blemishes. At a deeper level, in the dermis, water is more present in the extracellular component, and it is therefore at this level that the Laser acts by shortening collagen fibres and increasing the tension of elastic fibres, achieving a lifting effect on the skin. Over time, the action of the Laser will also cause the formation of new collagen and its remodelling.

What can be achieved with laser resurfacing
The ultrapulsed fractional CO2 laser used to combat the signs of photo-ageing and chronological ageing of the skin on the face (but also the neck, décolletage, and hands) can:

  • reduce wrinkles by 50-70%%
  • remove pre-cancerous skin lesions
  • to remove keratoses
  • to reduce the intensity of blemishes/lentigines or erase them (combined treatment for melasma)
  • remove or reduce acne scars
  • increase skin firmness at three months
  • increase elasticity and further reduce wrinkles thanks to the formation of new collagen in the following months

How skin regenerates after laser photorejuvenation
Tissue healing following laser treatment occurs from all the cutaneous appendages present in those same tissues (particularly from hair follicles), and from areas of skin not directly irradiated by the laser. This second aspect is very important and is best utilised with the new generation equipment available at our Laser Centre Absolute Health.

We have a FRACTIONAL CO2 Laser, equipped with a specific fractional scanner for skin rejuvenation. This uses a “Z”-shaped laser pulse emission pattern, based on a patented algorithm. This allows for untreated micro-spaces to be left between the treated points. This optimises the amount of tissue from which tissue regeneration will originate. It also increases the time interval between two adjacent points being hit, thereby allowing for their full cooling and patient comfort. To further control irradiation and enhance comfort, modern CO2 Lasers can emit laser pulses lasting only a few milliseconds (ms), i.e. a few thousandths of a second.

CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR LASER USE
The use of lasers, particularly ablative types, should be avoided in individuals prone to keloid formation, in all patients who have used oral retinoids in the preceding year, or who have undergone surgery in the same area. It is absolutely contraindicated to treat with lasers any areas that have been exposed to radiotherapy or that exhibit scleroatrophic dermatoses (lichen, scleroderma, etc.). Particular care must be taken when treating skin with a very high phototype (dark) with lasers due to the risk of hypo- and/or hyperpigmentation issues. Individuals with fair complexions are the best candidates for skin phot rejuvenation with CO2 Laser Resurfacing.

Domande frequenti

“What kind of result should I expect from this laser CO2 resurfacing skin rejuvenation treatment? I don't want it to be too noticeable or completely change my appearance.”

Our general approach to aesthetic medicine is to make you look and feel better, without excess and with a gradual process. Our commitment is to always uphold the concept that true beauty is striking on an unconscious level and is not disruptive. The restoration of skin tone, elasticity, and texture, a non-surgical lifting effect, with the reduction or even disappearance of wrinkles, blemishes, and keratoses.

“Can I have side effects?”
In the treated area, very small light spots will initially form, which will then darken. The skin will appear red and blisters may form. Within 3-5 days, small scabs will appear, much like when you get sunburned. After 3-5 days, the scabs will fall off, revealing new, young, pink, and wrinkle-free skin. Progressively, this new skin will stabilise and the colour will become increasingly uniform and youthful.

This healing and improvement process is all the more intense and prolonged, the more intense, deep, and “energetic” the Laser irradiation has been. Therefore, depending on the initial state of the skin and the availability to take days of rest from various social daily activities, the energy to which the Laser will be set and the number of sessions required will be decided.

“What precautions should I take after the treatment?”
As with any other cosmetic medicine treatment, the skin must have been carefully assessed and incorporated into a personalised home routine of cleansing, prevention, correction, and protection. Specifically for laser phototherapy, it is necessary to precede the treatment with a home-based protocol that aids the laser's action, enhances its results, acts against pre-existing blemishes, and modulates the activity of melanocytes, the skin cells that produce melanin, the substance responsible for skin tone and blemishes. Immediately before and after the fractional CO2 laser resurfacing session, antiviral and antibiotic coverage must be administered.

“How is the treatment carried out?”
The procedure begins with cleansing and disinfecting the area. We apply a local anaesthetic cream and, in situations requiring more energetic laser irradiation, administer mild conscious sedation. The skin is kept constantly moist with saline solution (the target for this CO2 laser is water), and we proceed with the removal of blemishes and all benign lesions that the patient wishes to eliminate (keratoses, fibromas, etc.). At this point, the laser settings are switched to “fractional” technology to treat the entire skin by creating micro-spots of laser irradiation separated by micro-spots of untreated skin, from which tissue regeneration will commence.

The length of the treatment depends on how many blemishes and lesions need to be eliminated before the “fractional” phase and on how many areas require this second phase; the face is always included, often the neck and décolletage, and the hands. It generally takes from 20 to 60 minutes.

“What precautions should I take after the treatment?”
After Laser Resurfacing, the face and other treated areas should only be washed with sterile saline solution. You must never pick at scabs or peeling skin; wait for them to fall off naturally. It is necessary to apply creams multiple times a day to aid healing, relieve itching and inflammation, and to hydrate and nourish the skin.

After a few days, it is advisable to start applying an antioxidant serum, and gradually resume your normal at-home routine with high-quality cosmeceuticals that also control melanin production and transport. Absolutely avoid sun exposure, use a hat, scarf, dark glasses and gloves, along with a sunscreen with SPF 50+ that is also active against UVA rays.
