Recognising Melanoma

The Melanoma It is the form of skin cancer that claims the most lives. It often originates from a mole but can also appear suddenly as a new dark spot on the skin. Recognising and treating melanoma early is fundamental. Check your body in front of a mirror, front, back, sides; arms, elbows, neck and head, through your hair, genitals, hands and feet, between the toes, ears, inside and out.

Knowing the ABCDE of warning signs can help you recognise melanoma and save yours or your loved ones’ lives:

A for asymmetry
Not round or oval; one half different from the other

B is for BORDERS
irregular, not clean

C for COLOUR
Non-uniform or varied. It can be brown or black; sometimes white, red, or blue

D for DIAMETER
greater than 6 millimetres

And as EVOLUTION
over time it changes colour, shape, size

How can you avoid skin cancer? Lead a healthy outdoor life, following simple precautions:

  • Do not expose yourself to the sun during the most dangerous hours: between 10 am and 2 pm.
  • Protect yourself with a hat, sunglasses, long sleeves, and long trousers.
  • Use an antioxidant serum to combat free radicals, followed by a professional sunscreen with at least SPF 30, reapplying throughout the day, even if it's cloudy or not summer.
  • Avoid sunbeds and tanning lamps: UV radiation can cause premature skin ageing and skin cancer.
