Oxidative Stress and pollution on the skin

The’ Skin ageing It is a chronic physiological process during which, progressively, cells lose their structural and support functionality.

The skin therefore thins, forming wrinkles deeper and deeper, localised or diffuse spots appear and the skin's tone decreases.

THE FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR SKIN AGEING

There is undoubtedly a genetic predisposition in this phenomenon that influences the progression of chrono-ageing, but many external factors can accelerate it.

Among the causes of extrinsic ageing, UVA, UVB, Infrared rays, and environmental pollution are the most involved as they affect the skin constantly and aggressively, inducing short-term and long-term damage.

Sunlight and infrared rays cause immediate sunburn, itching and burning; in the long term, however, they can cause spots of varying intensity and wrinkles to appear.

THE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

The latest scientific studies show that environmental pollution, exhaust fumes and fine dust also accelerate ageing and are responsible for skin allergies.

The skin is a shield organ for our body, responsible for the exchange between the internal and external environment, particularly exposed to the aggression of all polluting elements.

THE DAMAGE SUFFERED BY THE SKIN

Throughout life, the skin is constantly undergoing:

  • photo-oxidant damage (from chemical reactions between exhaust hydrocarbons and solar radiation);
  • damage due to acidic substances in suspension;
  • metabolic damage (due to heavy metals);
  • damage due to poor oxygenation (caused by carbon monoxide).

Normal cell functions are altered and overloaded to such an extent that they form an accumulation of dangerous free radicals.
